WW1 began because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. On the 28th June 1914 Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by the Black Hand Gang in the city of Sarajevo. This assassination triggered the Alliance system which meant that certain countries had to protect others if they were threatened.
Franz Ferdinand was driving through Sarajevo in an open topped car with his wife when a bomb was thrown at his car by a member of the Black Hand Gang. The bomb hit off the car but did not explode. Franz Ferdinand was furious that this assassination nearly happened never the less he continued with his tour of the city. After a banquet at the city hall Ferdinand continued his tour of the city. While he was touring in his open topped car his driver took a wrong turn and by chance one of the Black Hand Gang Gavrilo Princip was out side a shop with his gun. He very quickly shot Ferdinand and his wife therefore triggering the Alliance system and World War 1. Gavrilo Princip alone started WW1.
