The battle of the Somme was fought between the 1st July and the 18th November 1916. Over one million men were killed or wounded making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history and the bloodiest in WW1. It was fought on both sides of the river Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the allies. The German Second Army was defeated on the first day of the battle but it was also the heaviest amount of causalities for the British in the history of the British Army which suffered 57,470 causalities. By the end of this bloody battle the British and the French had done the best by penetrating 10km into German held territory.
